Amor Brujo
Siudy Garrido presents yet another spellbinding show with both new and resounding language, based on the emblematic work of the Spanish classical ballet Amor brujo (“Love, The Magician”) –written by preeminent Spanish Composer Manuel de Falla.
Amor brujo was commissioned by the LA Philharmonic and its enigmatic Conductor, Venezuelan Maestro Gustavo Dudamel. It starred and was directed and choreographed by Ms. Garrido. The show premiered in 2015, at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA, with four Sold-Out performances. From its premiere to today, Amor brujo has been staged alongside many prestigious philharmonic orchestras on famed stages all over, including in LA’s Hollywood Bowl in the summer of 2019.
Ms. Garrido’s interpretation of Amor brujo transforms a classical tragedy through Flamenco, with her established brand of expert fusion of the timeless and the contemporary. The plot revolves around Candelas, a young widow haunted by the ghost of her late husband, and her struggle to adjust to a new life. A magical tale of spells and witchcraft, the music holds moments of great beauty and innovation, to include three short songs in the mezzo-soprano range. The repertoire also includes the world-famous “Ritual Fire Dance”, “Song of the Wildfire”, and “Dance of Terror”.
In this reimagining of Amor brujo, the traditional mezzo-soprano is replaced with gorgeous and moving Flamenco singing by award-winning Singer and Latin Grammy Nominee Argentina López. Together with a breathtaking prelude composed by award-winning Flamenco Guitarist Jose Luis de la Paz, the Audience is brought even closer to the Flamenco stylings that Maestro Manuel de Falla was rightfully so passionate about. Never backing away from a creative challenge, the Siudy Flamenco Dance Theater has developed two versions of Amor brujo: one that’s 45 minutes, and a complete version that lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes.
